Things in Barcelona have continued to be awesome. We did a bunch of sightseeing around Barcelona last week: Parc Guell, FC Barcelona football stadium, Montjuic, Montserrat (pictured above), Barrio Gotico, plus went to the beach and went out at night. Oh, and today is my birthday: 23, or the second anniversary of my 21st birthday, as my friend Jen likes to say. Pictures and tales of adventures below the jump. If you want to see a lot of photos, check out my album on facebook. I believe I've set it to be public, but comment below if it's not. Right now it is pretty incomplete, but more should be loaded soon.
Parc Guell is a beautiful park/gardens on a hill (Texas mountain) just a mile or two from the city center. This bad boy was designed by the one and only Gaudi. It really is a beautiful place. Some of his buildings seem to me to be a bit tacky, but others I quite like. We went to the Sagrada Familia yesterday, which was super awesome and will get its own blog post soon.
We went to the stadium for the newly-crowned champion soccer team, FC Barcelona. I didn't particularly want to shell out 20 bucks for a tour of the inside, so I went for a walk around the neighborhood, where I saw cool things like this:
Our teacher was sick on Wednesday, and we heard that museums were free, so we went to the Parc Montjuic to visit the Joan Miro museum. He was a very important artist in Barcelona who worked from the early to middle 1900s, and his stuff was mostly pretty impressive. The Olympic stadium is also located at the park.
This is the MNAC, national museum of Catalan art, which we didn't go into because we were running short on time (and it wasn't free), but it still is very impressive to look at.
Thursday night was Sant Joan's festival, and we went to the all-night party on the beach, which was a ton of fun. Fires, firecrackers, and good times.
Saturday we went to Montserrat, which is a mountain outside of the city. You can ride a train out there, and then take a cable car halfway up the mountain where there is a monastery (cable car pictured at the top of this post).
The monastery is very cool. Keep in mind that it's halfway up the mountain (elevation 1000m at top).
We then hiked from the Monastery up to the top of one of the massifs. If you look carefully in the picture above, you can see the monastery in the bottom right corner.
The views were simply extraordinary, it was in the low 70s, partly cloudy, what more do you want. (my brother Charlie pictured above).
On Sunday we visited the gothic neighborhood, which was really cool. Narrow streets, great architecture.
All in all, it was a great week.
